FOXBORO – It has been one game and one win so far in the 2014 New England Pro-Am Mini Chowder Cup for the ’00 Division’s NE Thrashers, who stared their opening round of play with a 6-4 win over the North American Young Guns Friday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Both offenses were hot early, but most of the scoring was saved until the second half of the contest. The two sides traded blows before the opening frame was even half over, Brennen Dempsey giving the Young Guns a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the contest and then Antonio Andreozzi evening it up, 1-1, at 7:11. Those two goals were all that were seen in the opening 20:00.
The second half barrage began early, Young Guns forward Mike Farren getting thing started at 2:20 with the first of a combined eight goals in the period. The Thrashers responded to the early goal with a pair of their own, Stevie Rizzuto coming through with the first of three in the game at 2:45 and then Robbie Falso scoring at 5:54 for the 3-2 lead. Gordon Commings had it back to even less than 10-seconds later, scoring for the Young Guns at 6:03 to make it 3-3, but from their the Thrashers began to push way, once again scoring twice in a row. Liam Gorman put one away at 10:20 and then it was Rizzuto with his second at 12:07 for the 5-3 advantage.
Farren came through with his second of the game with just a minute to play to put the pressure on as he closed the gap to 5-4, but as they had done throughout, the Thrashers responded almost immediately. Rizzuto completed his hat trick at 19:36 to restore the two-goal cushion at final score of 6-4.
With three goals to his credit, Rizzuto ended the game as the Thrashers only multi-point scorer, the same being true for Farren with his two scores for the Young Guns. Kevin Dacey backstopped the win for the Thrashers.
