He has been associated with the National Hockey League for just a few days, but Quinton Byfield has already made NHL history. A 2015 New England Pro-Am alum, Byfield became highest drafted Black player in league history when the Los Angeles Kings selected him No. 2 overall in the 2020 NHL Draft on October 6th.
The 6’4” pivot spent the past two seasons playing for the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League. In 2018-2019, Byfield was named the OHL’s Rookie of the year, netting 61 points in 64 games. This most recent season, the totals were 32 goals, 50 assists and 82 points in 45 games for Sudbury. Byfield was also a member of Canada’s gold medal winning team at the 2020 World Junior Championship.
At Pro-Am’s 2015 Mini Chowder Cup, Byfield was named the 2002 Division’s All-Tournament Most Valuable Player as he led Rink Eye Selects to a perfect 6-0-0 record and tournament title. The Ontario native averaged two points per game in the tournament with five goals and seven assists.
